A DEMANDING SUBJECT
I don't work with aluminum often. It's a material I respect—for its lightness, its durability, and especially for the challenges it poses. This poster project for Agora Studio gave me the opportunity to delve into it more deeply for the first time. The aluminum I used is produced right here in Quebec—a local resource to be proud of. But just because it's local doesn't mean it's more forgiving! The slightest scratch, the smallest burr, everything is immediately visible. And of course, I've experienced it.
My first attempt wasn't quite right. The finish didn't adhere, the contrast was disappointing, and the masking errors made me start from scratch. That's often how you learn—by starting over with a little more understanding and patience.
Learning through failure
The second attempt was much more successful. I opted for a hand-brushed finish. The contrast is sharp, the logo well-defined, and the cutouts are clean. It's always satisfying to see a project recover after a failed first attempt.
Conclusion
This poster is a good reminder that every new material comes with a learning curve. But honestly, I really enjoyed being out of my comfort zone. I hope to have more opportunities to work with aluminum—this time, with a little more confidence from the start.
